When Is It Time to Change Your Program | PLATEAUS/PERIODIZATION/PROGRESS
Changing your workout routine too often or too infrequently can have a vastly negative impact on your ability to make progress.
To regularly progress with fitness you need to have an appropriate amount of stimulus that will coerce your body into changing.
That being said, your muscles don’t need to be constantly confused to make regular progress, however, that doesn’t mean you should follow the same workout routine indefinitely.
There are 4 major reasons you should change your workout program.
1️⃣ IF YOUR PROGRAM STOPS WORKING
This is kind of obvious but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, no longer applies and you need to change your program to introduce stimulus back to your workouts.
2️⃣ YOU’RE BORED
If your workout program becomes stagnant and uninteresting then your motivation to workout will suffer. At that point, it’s a good idea to find a program that will help you bring interest/motivation back to your workout routine.
3️⃣ YOUR GOALS CHANGE
Your workout program needs to help you accomplish your fitness goals. If those happen to change then it’s a good idea to alter your workout program to best suit you reaching your fitness goal.
4️⃣ YOU’RE INJURED
If your workout program is consistently at too high of an intensity level it can lead to overtraining, burnout, or injury. If you happen to be suffering from burnout then it would be well advised to implement a recovery period or transition your workout program to help alleviate your symptoms. On the other hand, if you are injured then it would be a good idea to adequately recover/heal or perform rehabilitation exercises to bring your body back up to speed.
Ultimately it’s beneficial to change your work program on a semi-regular basis so your body can continue to adapt and make progress over time. The closer you are to a beginner the less frequent you need to change your program and the close you are to an advanced gym goes the more frequent you need to change your program. A good rule of thumb is to change your workout program every 8-12 weeks.
